Although Windows Server 2008 has become the prevalent operating system of choice, application compatibility issues and strained IT budgets are causing Windows Server 2003 deployments to still be prevalent on newly purchased servers. The problem in these deployments arises when you are using a newer RAID controller with drivers that are not bundled with the Server 2003 installation media. To compound the problem, the only way to access additional drivers during a Server 2003 installation is via floppy disk. It’s not big news that most newer servers don’t even come floppy drives these days. One of the best ways to overcome this is to slipstream RAID drivers into the Windows Server 2003 installation media.

My application of choice to do this is nLite. The nLite application can be obtained from. Once installed, you can copy your installation media to the local computer you are working from, import the RAID drivers you require, and create an ISO image that includes the new drivers.

Hi everyoneI have problem with Installation Windows Server 2003 R2 from Flash USB. Reason on which I am installing it from flash is that System X 3550 M2 doesn't have CD/DVD-Rom drive and I don't have external one here.I've configured Drives in RAID 1 from Web Bios, these are 2 disks with 135 GB capacity. When I am powering up the installation process from USB Flash Windows Setup tries to install Windows on the Flash USB instead of HDD Drives.

I have tried different configuration in BIOS and the result is always the same. I will be very glad if someone have some idea how to fix it and can share them with me.Thanks in advance!! I'm in the same boat as you except I'm trying to install 2K8 R2 on a x3650 M3 that didn't come with a CDDVD drive. Does anyone know how to make the system boot from the USB key that has the Operating System.iso on it?

So far I used IBM’s “Bootable Media Creator” to bring the servers up to the latest firmware updates using an external cd/dvd drive that was connected with USB. Everything installed great.

When I try to install Server 2008 R2 I get an error when windows try’s to expand the files. I’ve read on forums that the files become missing/corrupt during the copy process. People have had success with installing the OS from a flash drive. I went into my systems BIOS and added “Legacy Only” in the top of the boot order followed by CD/DVD, Floppy and the Hard Drive. I have also added “USB Storage” to the top thinking it would force the system to boot from the USB device. I haven’t had any luck. Daniel how do you have your boot order setup?

Does anyone have a link or know of a video that we can follow to try and get our system's to boot to a USB key so the operating systems can then be installed? I know there are different ways to install the operating system but I'd really like to know how to do it from a USB key. I've tried making the USB key bootable with a program called 'WinToFlas' and that didn't work. I also tried formatting the USB in fat32-creating a new partition- activate and assign it a drive letter.

I then mounted the operating system iso to a virtual dvd drive, and did an xopy from the source drive to the destination (USB) which completed successfully. I turn my server on with the USB key plugged in and they server will not boot to the key. I am not for 100% sure how about R2, but 2003 SP1 didn't have drivers for RAID controller for x3500 in the installation media. You have to add it using F6 from floppy disk (Windows 2003 can import disk drivers only by this way), or integrate RAID drivers into distributive using something like nLite utility, or 'by hand'.BTW it's Simple Swap or HotSwap x3550? They have different raid controllers.

In case of SimpleSwap model, i recommend to completely disable RAID from BIOS and use Windows mirroring instead. Raid in these models are based in the Intel chipset and i had several times troubles with it.P.S. I am curious too, how did you create bootable Win2003 installation media on usb? As far as i remember PetoUSB can do this, but i didn't try to use it to create bootable installation media instead of BartPe. I am pretty sure that RAID Management controller drivers are already installed on the server. Because I can configure it correctly through WebBios.

TO install Windows Server 2003 on Flash USB I used winToFlash, it's useful tool designed to making bootable Flash USB Windows Installer, it works on Server 2k3 and 2k8, XP, Vista and Win7.Now I am trying to install the system through PXE Network Booting, but I cannot make Server to boot from my cd/dvd drive. It's making a connection copying image of bootable floppy and then returns Code 4 error from CD-Drive. I am pretty sure that RAID Management controller drivers are already installed on the server. Because I can configure it correctly through WebBios.what drivers do you mean? I am talking about drivers for Raid controller for Windows 2003 Server OS.I missed you mentioned WebBios, that means server is new x3550M2/M3 with LSI ServeRaid. Windows 2003 Server distributive doesn't contain drivers for LSI Raid controllers.

When setup starts it sees only you USB drive and why doesn't offer HDD as option. Why you didn't use ServerGuide to install OS? It'll add all required drivers to Windows installation.ServerGuid v.8 is based on Windows OS and i may suppose that winToFlash can create a bootable USB based on it.
